Walking Through a Very Large Virtual Environment in Real-time

چکیده
Users expect high and constant rendering frame rates when they interactively navigate in a Virtual Environment (VE). However, when the VE is too large to t into the main memory, the frame rates can become unacceptable. In this paper, we combine walkthrough semantics and database techniques, such as indexing, caching and prefetching, to improve the performance of walkthrough of a very large VE. We implemented a prototype walkthrough system called REVIEW (REaltime VIrtual Environment Walkthrough) and evaluated its performance on a 1 GB synthetic data-set generated to simulate a large cityscape. Our results show that the proposed techniques are e ective for generating constant frame rate and improving the visual e ects.

Walking in Virtual Reality: Flexible Spaces and Other Techniques
In many virtual reality applications the virtual world is larger than the available physical workspace. Multiple mechanical solutions have been developed to support the exploration of large virtual environments. However, real walking is still the most immersive way of supporting locomotion in a virtual environment. Redirected walking techniques enable natural locomotion through large scale virt...

In CAVE-like environments human locomotion is significantly restricted due to physical space and configural constraints. Interaction techniques based upon stepping in place have been suggested as a way to simulate long range locomotion. We describe a new method for step detection and estimation of forward walking speed and direction in an immersive virtual environment. To calibrate our system a...
متن کاملInvestigations on the interactions between vision and locomotion using a treadmill virtual environment
Treadmill-based virtual environments have the potential to allow near natural locomotion through large-scale simulated spaces. To be effective, such devices need to provide users with visual and biomechanical sensations of walking that are sufficiently accurate to evoke perception-action couplings comparable to those occurring in the real world. We are exploring this problem using a custom buil...
متن کاملGeneralised Algorithms for Redirected Walking in Virtual Environments
Several authors have identified benefits from allowing users to move through a virtual environment (VE) by walking in the real world. However implementation of this approach can be problematic, particularly for largescale VEs, primarily because of the need to avoid the user colliding with real-world obstacles. 'Redirected walking'[1] offers a possible solution to this problem — this algorithm d...
